Thomas Szapucki will miss the remainder of the 2017 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in New York on Thursday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Fantasy Impact

This is a big blow for the pitching prospect, as he had been dominating at Low-A Columbia prior to this incident (2.79 ERA, 27:10 K:BB in 29 innings pitched). Szapucki will start on the long road back from the operation, likely rendering him unavailable until the latter half of the 2018 season or perhaps even the start of the 2019 campaign.

Pete Kozma was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Thursday.

Fantasy Impact

Kozma was just 4-for-36 with 18 strikeouts at the plate since coming to the Rangers in late April. The infielder was cast off by the club due to the return of Keone Kela (shoulder) from the disabled list prior to Thursday's contest with Baltimore. Although Kozma's versatility was an immense positive during his time in Texas, his lack of hitting eventually became too much of a burden.

Robert Stephenson is a candidate to start Saturday's game against the Marlins, John Fay of WCPO.com reports.

Fantasy Impact

The Reds are not yet listing a probable starter for Saturday, but Stephenson would be on normal rest, having last pitched for Triple-A Louisville on Monday. Manager Bryan Price said the team is pleased with what its seen from Stephenson at Louisville since his demotion in late May, and indeed the numbers in eight appearances (seven starts) are impressive. Cincinnati may also consider starting Michael Lorenzen on Saturday, making it a bullpen game.

Kevin Newman was promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday.

Fantasy Impact

The first-round draft pick (2015) didn't overwhelm anyone with the bat at Double-A this season, as his slash line was just .259/.310/.359. Newman was heralded as a solid middle infield prospect after mashing at the lower levels of the minor leagues, but his prospect shine has faded a bit after showing little power and posting a rough batting average in a repeat of the Double-A level.

Lukas Schiraldi will join High-A Jupiter's bullpen, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Fantasy Impact

Schiraldi began his professional career as a starter, but he transitioned to a relief role this season in the Mariners' organization and has become a strikeout machine (63 strikeouts in 37.1 innings pitched). He'll remain in that role now that he's with the Marlins organization as he looks to maintain the whiffs while lowering his rough 4.58 ERA.

Pablo Lopez will join High-A Jupiter's rotation, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Fantasy Impact

Lopez has struggled a bit this season as a starter for High-A Modesto in the Mariners' organization (5.04 ERA), but he's shown surprising durability since undergoing Tommy John surgery back in 2014. He'll remain at the same level in his new organization as he tries to get back on track.

Brandon Miller will act as a member of Low-A Greensboro's rotation now that he's in the Marlins' organization, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Fantasy Impact

Miller spent the beginning of the 2017 campaign with Low-A Clinton in the Mariners organization, where he compiled a 3.65 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP in 18 starts for the LumberKings. He'll look to continue that success in his new organization against the same level of competition.

Brayan Hernandez will join short-season Batavia, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Fantasy Impact

The newly acquired prospect will, as expected, ply his trade for the Muckdogs upon joining the Marlins organization. Hernandez plated a .252/.306/.408 line with two home runs, 15 RBI and four stolen bases for Low-A Everett while with the Mariners and will continue what should be a long path toward the majors.

Yusniel Diaz (hand) is currently on the disabled list but is expected to return soon, Kyle Glaser of Baseball America reports.

Fantasy Impact

Diaz has been on the disabled list since July 9, but was having a pretty solid year before the injury. With High-A Rancho Cucamonga this season, Diaz is slashing .291/.355/.438 with eight home runs and seven stolen bases, albeit on 15 attempts.

Will Smith (hand) was hit by a pitch during his debut with Double-A Tulsa on July 10 and is out at least another four weeks, Kyle Glaser of Baseball America reports.

Fantasy Impact

It wasn't exactly the dream promotion that most prospects imagine when they get moved up. Smith was hit twice in the game, with the second one proving costly as it fractured his hand. Before the promotion, Smith was hitting .232 with 11 home runs with High-A Rancho Cucamonga.

Ryan Mountcastle was called up to Double-A Bowie on Thursday, Steve Melewski of MASN Sports reports.

Fantasy Impact

Mountcastle will make his first start with Bowie at third base against Altoona on Thursday. The 20-year-old was hitting .314/.343/.542 with 15 home runs and 47 RBI during 88 games with High-A Frederick upon his promotion. Mountcastle will get a chance to see how he stacks up at the next level, with a spotlight on his K:BB that was sitting at 61:14 during his time with Frederick. The top prospect will need to improve on those numbers in order to continue his progression for the Orioles.

Steven Duggar has missed most of this season while dealing with hip and elbow injuries, J.J. Cooper of Baseball America reports.

Fantasy Impact

Just days after being activated from from the hip injury June 28, Duggar returned to the disabled list with an elbow injury June 30. Since coming off the DL from the elbow problem July 15, Duggar has has gone 3-for-11 in three games to bring his season tally to 5-for-18 with High-A San Jose.

Rodolfo Martinez (oblique) is currently on the disabled list due to his oblique injury, but also missed time earlier this season due to a muscle injury in his shoulder, J.J. Cooper of Baseball America reports.

Fantasy Impact

Martinez has really been beaten up this season, being limited to only 8.0 innings for Double-A Richmond. Last season, the reliever spent half the season at the Double-A level and recorded an ERA of 6.65 with 17 strikeouts in 23.0 innings. Even in his limited time this season, his numbers have been similar to last season with a 5.63 ERA and five strikeouts.

Reyes Moronta has missed time this season with a muscle issue in his shoulder, J.J. Cooper of Baseball America reports.

Fantasy Impact

The injury caused Double-A Richmond to put him on the disabled list June 3, but the reliever appears to be nearing as a return as he just made his first rehab appearance with the Arizona League Giants on July 16. Before the injury, Moronta had an ERA with 4.00 with 26 strikeouts in 18.0 innings for Double-A Richmond. He was also on the big-league roster for one game in May but did not make an appearance.

Jose Herrera (ankle) is out until early August with a sprained ankle, Bill Mitchell of Baseball America reports.

Fantasy Impact

Once the Diamondbacks' top international signee, Herrera has been hurt every season since he joined the organization in 2013. This season, the culprit has been an ankle sprain that has kept him out since June 12. Before the injury, the catching prospect was hitting .216 with 13 doubles for Low-A Kane County.

Blake Swihart (ankle) may continue playing during the offseason in winter ball, according to manager John Farrell, Evan Drellich of WEEI.com reports.

Fantasy Impact

Swihart has been trying to catch behind the plate, although his ankle has gotten in the way of that for the most part. The 25-year-old began working out at the corners of the infield in recent days, and if he's unable to fully recover from this injury over the rest of the season, Swihart could be looking at winter ball in order to get some work in. During the 2017 season with Triple-A Pawtucket, Swihart is hitting .213/.265/.327 with three home runs and 20 RBI in 41 games.

Kevin Kramer broke his hand in June after being hit by a pitch, J.J. Cooper of Baseball America reports.

Fantasy Impact

Kramer was having a really solid year with Double-A Altoona before being placed on the disabled list June 11, batting .297 with six home runs to earn on a spot in the Eastern League All-Star Game. He hasn't been able to receive any action since then, a tough blow for a young prospect who had been exceeding expectations before the injury.

Stephen Alemais hurt his hand/thumb sliding into a base, J.J. Cooper of Baseball America reports.

Fantasy Impact

The Pirates' prospect has spent most of this season with Low-A West Virginia but is currently in the Gulf Coast League on a rehab assignment after being placed on the disabled list May 19. While with Low-A West Virginia, the shortstop was struggling on offense with a batting average of .223 with three home runs and five stolen bases on eight attempts.

Rookie Davis (back) was reinstated from the 7-day disabled list at Triple-A Louisville on Thursday, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Fantasy Impact

Davis has been over the back injury for a while now, as he's made three starts with Double-A Pensacola in July following a pair of rehab outings with the Reds' rookie-level Arizona League team. He had been pitching for Pensacola due to the lack of space on the Triple-A roster, but the recent promotion of Sal Romano back to the big club may have opened up a rotation spot at Louisville for Davis.

Edmundo Sosa (wrist) had hamate bone surgery in June and has begun rehabbing, Kyle Glaser of Baseball America reports.

Fantasy Impact

The average return time for an injury like Sosa's is 4-to-6 weeks, but it is unclear how well the shortstop is following that timetable as the Cardinals haven't announced a formal return date. Sosa has spent most of his time this season with High-A Palm Beach but appeared in one game with Double-A Springfield before suffering the injury.
